Passage: Colossians 3:22-4:1

Preacher: Tim Akin

Series: The Church Out There

Main Idea:
We are the church out there when we live on mission through our work

What is God’s Design for Work?

  • Misconceptions:
    • Work is a result of sin.
    • Work is a means to an end.
    • Genesis 3:17-19:
“cursed is the ground because of you; in pain, you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
  • Truth:
    • God is a worker. (Gen 1:1).
      • Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning, God creates the heavens and the earth.”
    • God designedus to work(Gen 1:28, 2:15).
      • Genesis 1:28
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
      • Genesis 2:15
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

How Should I Work?

  • Misconceptions:
    • To pay the bills.
    • To provide a better life.
  • Truth:
    • To put Jesus on display. (Col 3:22-4:1)
    • To proclaim the Gospel. (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12)

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
