Who Is Jesus And What Do I Do About It?
Mark 8:22-9:1

Quote: “We American Christians have a way of taking the Jesus of the Bible and twisting him into a version of Jesus that we are more comfortable with. A nice middle-class American Jesus. A Jesus who doesn’t mind materialism and would never call us to give away everything we have. A Jesus who is fine with nominal devotion that does not infringe on our comforts. A Jesus who wants us to be balanced, who wants us to avoid dangerous extremes, and who for that matter wants us to avoid danger altogether. A Jesus who brings comfort and prosperity to us as we live out our Christian spin on the American Dream.” – David Platt

Main Idea: What you think and believe about Jesus will determine how you serve Him and how you live out your life.

Question #1: Who is Jesus? (Mark 8:22-33).

  1. He is the Great Physician (Mark 8:22-26).
    • Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away!”
  2. He is the Promised Messiah (Mark 8:27-30).
    • Matthew 16:16 “The Son of the living God.”
  3. He is the Suffering Servant (Mark 8:31-33).

Question #2: What do I do? (Mark 8:34-9:1).

  1. Put the Self-Centered Life to Death (Mark 8:34).
  2. Put the Safe Life to Death (Mark 8:35).
  3. Put the Self-Serving Life to Death (Mark 8:36-9:1).
    • Philippians 1:27: “for to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”

Quote: “The McCartney’s had all the money in the world,” said a tourist who stopped to take in the atmosphere outside the ranch. “Enough to afford their privacy. Enough to give them a beautiful view. But all the money in the world wasn’t enough to keep her alive.” - Newsweek

Quote: “World evangelization is no longer an option in which the super zealous can gain extra brownie points... God will always cause His true people around the globe [and in this room] to give up their lives for the gospel.” – John Piper
