Title: The Way To Achieve True Greatness

Mark 9:30-50

Main Idea: The Gospel of Jesus frees us from an addiction to ourselves.

Embrace Suffering (9:30-32).

  • The Gospel: Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and God raised Him from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
  • "Apart from Christ, there is no explanation for such a life."
    -William Borden

  • "Jesus says to death, you get me. You don't get them."
    (Bernie Cueto)

  • "God humbles us before He heals us."
     (Bernie Cueto).

Serve Others (9:33-37).

  • David Brainerd: “It is sweet to be nothing and less than nothing that Christ may be all in all.”
  • Serve Test: If First Baptist Douglasville no longer existed would our community notice and would they care?

Encourage Others (9:38-41).

  • Jealousy Test: How do I respond when others succeed?
  • Does it matter to me if I get the recognition for a job well done?
  • Do I desire a place of honor and recognition?
  • Is popularity crucial to my sense of self-worth?
  • Am I a name dropper of those I know (or pretend to know?!)
  • Do I think I have something valuable to say about almost everything?

Sin (9:42-50).

  • John Owen: “be killing sin or sin will be killing you.”
  • “What you feed will live. What you starve will die.”
  • Jonathan Edwards: “Things we value supremely, like eyes, hands, and feet – should not stand in the way of eternal life.”
  • Life Principle: Being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong person, will always result in the wrong thing
