Passage: Mark 14:53-72

Preacher: Tim Akin

Series: Follow Me: The Gospel According to Mark

Main Idea:
We are helpless sinners in need of the perfect Savior

 Jesus Is…

  1. The Sinless Savior (Mark 14:53-59).
    • John 2:19: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
    • Hebrews 4:15, “15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  1. The Suffering Savior (Mark 14:60-61).
    • Isaiah 53:7: He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like alamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.”
    • Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give HIS LIFE as a RANSOM for many.”

  1. The Sovereign Savior (Mark 14:62-65).
    • Daniel 7:13-14: “I saw in the night visions, andbehold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
    • David Garland:Jesus suffered the greatest injustice. He was the victim of lies and innuendo, frame-ups, and a rigged jury.”

We Are…

  1. Comfortable Sinners (Mark 14:54, 66-67).

  1. Dishonest Sinners (Mark 14:68-71).

  1. Broken Sinners (Mark 14:72).
    • Luke 22:61: “turned and looked at Peter.”
    • Sinclair Ferguson: “That look was to be his salvation, for he saw in those eyes not condemnation but compassion. That was the turning point in his life... Now, in this most painful and memorable of ways, Peter saw himself as he really was, repented, and was remade into the great apostle.

The Good News:
Forgiveness is made available through repentance of sin and faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
