 God’s Design & Marriage – Genesis 2:18-25

Text: Genesis 2:18-25.

  1. Marriage is God’s idea, not ours (Gen. 2:18, 20-22).
    • indicates not only the absence of something good but a substantial deficiency (Kent Hughes).”
    • Marriage was born in the loving heart of God for the blessing and benefit of mankind. No matter what the courts may decree, or society may permit, when it comes to marriage, God had the first word and He will have the last word (Warren Wiersbe).”

  1. God has a design for marriage (Gen. 2:18, 23-24).
    1. Men and women are distinctly different (v.18).
      • Ephesians 5:25: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church andgave himself up for her.”
      • Genesis 2:18: “I will make him a helper fit for him.”
  • So man’s “helper” would be no “weak sister” by any stretch of misogynist imagination… and as his matching opposite, she would supply what was lacking in him (Kent Hughes).”
  1. Men and women are equals (v. 23).
    • Genesis 1:27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
    • 1 Corinthians 11:11-12 Nevertheless,in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.”
  • “She was not made out of his head to top him, not out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved (Matthew Henry).”
  1. One man, one woman, for life (v. 24).
    • Genesis 2:24: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

  1. We depart from God’s design (v.25).
    • Genesis 2:25: And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
  2. How do we recover and pursue God’s design? (Eph. 5:31-33).
    • Ephesians 5:31-33: Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
