Passage: 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

Preacher: Tim Akin

Series: Called Out: Study through the book of 1st Corinthians

Preaching through books of the Bible one chapter and one verse at a time is not for wimps!

  • You have to explain confusing topics: Head Coverings.
  • You have to address controversial topics: Gender Roles.

In regard to any given topic, Christians must always ask the question, “What does the Bible say?”

1. God has a design for gender.

a. Men and women are distinctly different(1 Corinthians 11:3,7-9).

  • 1 Corinthians 11:3: “But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”
  • “Head” – Authority(v.3).
  • Men– A Loving and sacrificial leader(1 Cor. 11:7-9; Eph. 5:25).
    • Ephesians 5:25: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
  • Women – “A helper as opposite of him” (Gen. 2:18).
    • Genesis 2:18: “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.”

b. Men and women are equals. (1 Corinthians 11:11-12)

  • They are “interdependent”(1 Cor. 11:11-12).
    • 1 Corinthians 11:11-12, “Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman;for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.”
    • Tom Schreiner: “A difference in function between men and women does not negate the equality and value of the sexes.”

 2. God has a design for corporate worship.

  • Glorify God. (1 Corinthians 11:4,10)
    • 1 Corinthians 11:4: “Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.”
    • 1 Corinthians 11:10: “A wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.”

  • Honor one another. (1 Corinthians 11:5-6)

  • Promote unity. (1 Corinthians 11:16)
